Roscommon Town is the capital of the county, rich in historical associations and containing many impressive buildings. Golfers can play a round at 3 excellent 18 hole golf courses in the region. The courses are located in Roscommon town, Athlone 24km away and Glasson 40km away. There is long established 9 hole golf course in Strokestown 29km away, the long establishes and very popular 9 hole course in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.
Roscommon Golf Club
The club was established in 1904 with a nine hole course set on the old Mote Park Estate. In 1991 the members bought an additional 58 acres of land to extend the course to the current 18 holes. Over the years members have endeavored to enhance the course and facilities and today this 18 hole championship course offers members and visitors an enjoyable and challenging round of golf.
Racing officially began at Roscommon Race Course in 1885 and with the exception of a 12 year period from 1936 – 1948 has continued ever since.
The course attracts support from leading trainers and jockeys in Ireland in both flat and national hunt racing and is noted for it's friendly atmosphere. Roscommon Race Course is within walking distance from Gleeson's Town House. For race goers, Roscommon Race Course hosts meetings in summer and autumn.
Mount Cashel Equestrian Centre is ideally located near the scenic Lough Ree along the picturesque River Shannon and at the foot of the impressive Slieve Bawn Mountain. The Kelly family have run Roscommon Equestrian Centre in Mount Cashel, Kilrooskey, Roscommon since 2003. It is a popular destination with everything you could need for a truly enjoyable riding experience.
Entertainment for the whole family
For the kids the local Loughneane Park and playground can cater for children up to twelve years. Glendeer Pet Farm and Lough Key Forest Park are also just a short drive away. Enjoy the tree-top canopy walk, the outdoor adventure playground and water skiing on the lake. Roscommon Leisure Zone caters for all ages with a soft play area, Uppsy Daisies for the younger kids, 10 pin bowling and amusement arcade to while away the hours. C & L Plex, a cinema and leisure centre is also centrally located in Roscommon Town offering a play area for kids, a cafe and 5 screen cinema.
